Telesco open to bringing back Antonio Gates
Fri, Jan 18, 2019, 3:30 PM
The Athletic
Chargers GM Tom Telesco suggested he'd be open to bringing back impending free agent Antonio Gates in 2019.
Analysis: The Chargers planned to move on from Gates last season but wound up re-signing him after Hunter Henry tore his ACL at OTAs. "My heart says, yeah, he'll be back next year," said Telesco. "But you put your G.M. hat on, and you look at what's the role, where are resources are with the cap." Even if the Bolts re-up with Gates, the 38-year-old would just be Henry's backup.

Antonio Gates wants to play in 2019
Mon, Jan 14, 2019, 9:40 AM
ESPN
Antonio Gates said he wants to play in 2019.
Analysis: "I just don't see myself walking away with this taste," Gates said after the Chargers' loss to the Patriots on Sunday. "But that has to be a collective decision. I can't just want to come back. So we'll see how it goes." It is unlikely the Chargers would have brought Gates back this season if Hunter Henry had not torn his ACL during OTAs, so it is far from a given they will welcome the veteran back this spring. Gates managed just 28 catches for 333 yards and two touchdowns during the regular season, adding 76 yards and another score in the playoffs. The future Hall-of-Famer will turn 39 in June.

Austin Ekeler
Ekeler reels in three catches in loss to Pats
Sun, Jan 13, 2019, 4:59 PM
Austin Ekeler pulled in three-of-five targets for 19 yards Sunday in the Chargers' Divisional Round loss to New England.
Analysis: Ekeler didn't see any ball-carrying work in Sunday's defeat, though he drew a handful of targets, most coming with the Bolts playing from behind in the second half. The undrafted 23-year-old shined in a change-of-pace role this year, compiling 958 yards from scrimmage with six touchdowns during the regular season. Melvin Gordon is still the Chargers' unquestioned workhorse but for fantasy purposes, you won't find many better handcuffs than Ekeler.
Mike Williams

Hunter Henry
Hunter Henry active for Divisional Round
Sun, Jan 13, 2019, 10:39 AM
Hunter Henry (knee) is active for the Divisional Round against the Patriots.
Analysis: Henry practiced all week but wasn't a lock to be active after an eight month layoff. He's not going to see a full complement of snaps, but Henry should see time in passing and red-zone situations. The Chargers inactives are TE Sean Culkin RB Detrez Newsome, C Cole Toner, OG Forrest Lamp, WR Dylan Cantrell, DE Anthony Lanier, and DT T.Y. McGill.
Hunter Henry
Hunter Henry expected to return vs Patriots

Ian Rapoport on Twitter
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Chargers expect Hunter Henry (questionable, knee) to play in the Divisional Round game against the Patriots.
Analysis: Henry has been trending toward playing after practicing fully all week. His workload figures to be limited coming off an eight month layoff, but he should see snaps in pass situations. Henry's likely committee role makes him a risky touchdown-dependent play.
Melvin Gordon
Melvin Gordon removed from injury report
Fri, Jan 11, 2019, 1:29 PM
Los Angeles Chargers on Twitter
Melvin Gordon (knee) wasn't listed on the Chargers' final injury report for Sunday's Divisional Round game against the Patriots.
Analysis: He practiced fully on Friday, prompting his removal from the injury report. Gordon's knees are both banged up, though he'll play through the pain Sunday in the most important game of his career. He carries more risk than usual playing at much less than 100 percent, though his reduced price on FanDuel ($7,400) makes him an interesting GPP play.
Hunter Henry
Hunter Henry questionable to face Patriots
Fri, Jan 11, 2019, 1:28 PM
Los Angeles Chargers on Twitter
Hunter Henry (knee) is questionable for Sunday's Divisional Round game against the Patriots.
Analysis: Henry was a full participant at all three practices this week, though he may need more time coming off a nearly eight-month absence. Even if Henry suits up for Sunday's game in Foxboro, he'll probably just play a handful of snaps. Fantasy owners should be looking elsewhere this week.
Melvin Gordon
Melvin Gordon (knees) practicing Thursday

Fernando Ramirez on Twitter
Melvin Gordon (knees) will practice on Thursday.
Analysis: Gordon said he could have practiced Wednesday, but that coach Anthony Lynn wanted him to "chill." It was not bad advice. Gordon is extremely banged up, but he will be out there against the Patriots. The question will be how many touches he can handle.
Nick Rose
Chargers add K Nick Rose for kickoffs
Thu, Jan 10, 2019, 8:52 AM
Adam Schefter on Twitter
Chargers signed K Nick Rose.
Analysis: Oddly for a Chargers kicker, Michael Badgley performed well in the Wild Card round, so the Chargers are certainly not looking to replace him. According to Adam Schefter, Rose is being added to handle kickoffs against the Patriots.
Hunter Henry
Hunter Henry (knee) practicing in full
Wed, Jan 9, 2019, 4:54 PM
Sam Fortier on Twitter
Hunter Henry (knee) is practicing in full for Sunday's Divisional Round game against the Patriots.
Analysis: He's on track to make his season debut after missing the past seven months with a torn ACL. Henry has been one of the better receiving tight ends in football since arriving as a second-round pick in 2016, though he'll likely be on a strict snap count against New England. Antonio Gates and Virgil Green will have their roles scaled back upon Henry's return.
Brandon Mebane
Chargers NT Mebane's newborn daughter dies
Wed, Jan 9, 2019, 2:44 PM
Mike DiGiovanna on Twitter
Chargers NT Brandon Mebane's newborn daughter passed away last Thursday after a battle with a rare heart condition.
Analysis: Gut-wrenching stuff. Mebane's daughter, Makenna, was born premature with trisomy 13, a very rare defect. Her prognosis was always discouraging, but it doesn't make things any easier on the 34-year-old and his family. Mebane was away from the team for several weeks during the season but plans to play this week in New England. Our condolence go out to Mebane and his family.
