Mike Williams scores in second preseason game
Sun, Aug 19, 2018, 11:44 PM
Mike Williams caught a 25-yard touchdown in the Chargers' second preseason game.
Analysis: Williams high-pointed a third-quarter fade for his touchdown. He started the Chargers' first preseason game, but played deep into the second half this week. Williams' target share is a concern behind Keenan Allen, but there's potential for him to make a red-zone impact.
Joey Bosa
Bosa (foot) to miss second preseason game

Joey Bosa (foot) remains sidelined and will sit out Saturday's preseason game against the Seahawks.
Analysis: Bosa's foot injury was called "nothing serious" when it happened, though he's now been sidelined nine days. The Chargers have zero incentive to rush their defensive superstar, though it would be nice to see Bosa dressed for the regular season dress rehearsal on August 25.
Caleb Sturgis
Caleb Sturgis battling with Roberto Aguayo
Thu, Aug 16, 2018, 8:11 AM
Los Angeles Times
Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said the kicking battle between Caleb Sturgis and Roberto Aguayo is "so close right now."
Analysis: Considering the team was undone by bad kicking last season, getting the position right is of the utmost importance. Sturgis performed better in practice this week, but he missed a 41-yarder in the preseason opener, a bad sign based on how his coach evaluates the position. "We'll see how it plays out in games," Lynn said. "What a player does in games, to me, is what I evaluate the most." A failed second-round pick by the Bucs, Aguayo has missed nine of his 31 NFL attempts with just four makes on 11 attempts from 40 yards or more.
Forrest Lamp
Forrest Lamp could still win right guard job
Tue, Aug 14, 2018, 2:54 PM
Orange County Register
The Chargers are open to second-year pro OG Forrest Lamp unseating Michael Schofield at right guard.
Analysis: Just activated from the PUP list on Monday, Lamp doesn't have a ton of time left to get in shape and win the starting job, but the Bolts would certainly love it if he did. More likely might be Lamp beginning the year on the bench before replacing Schofield some time in September or October.
Forrest Lamp
Chargers activate Forrest Lamp from PUP list
Mon, Aug 13, 2018, 12:28 PM
Chargers activated OG Forrest Lamp (knee) from the active/PUP list.
Analysis: The No. 38 overall pick of the 2017 draft missed his entire rookie season with a torn ACL. He underwent a "minor" follow-up procedure during the offseason. The Chargers were committed to bringing Lamp along slowly and it appears the approach worked. If he can stay healthy and get in shape over the next three weeks, Lamp could begin the year as the Chargers' starting right guard.
Austin Ekeler
Austin Ekeler logs 7 touches Saturday night
Sun, Aug 12, 2018, 1:12 PM
Austin Ekeler rushed five times for 22 yards and caught two passes for 42 yards in the Chargers' preseason opener.
Analysis: The Chargers' change-of-pace back looked explosive on his seven touches and remains locked in as Melvin Gordon's primary backup. Rookie Justin Jackson has been sidelined with a hamstring injury and isn't assured a roster spot. Ekeler should be owned in all fantasy leagues with a chance at some standalone flex value, and RB2 upside if Gordon were to miss time.
Mike Williams
Mike Williams has 'big role in the red zone'
Thu, Aug 9, 2018, 9:24 AM
Mike Williams said he has "a big role in the red zone right now."
Analysis: With Antonio Gates still unsigned and Hunter Henry out for the year with a torn ACL, the Chargers need to replace 32 percent of their red-zone targets, and Williams always seemed like the best option. "Henry was a big red zone threat, and that's a spot where I can help," Williams said. "So we're working on a lot of that stuff right now." His target share is still uncertain coming off a lost rookie season, but touchdown upside alone makes him worth a look in the double-digit rounds.
Melvin Gordon
Lynn wants to get Melvin Gordon more catches
Thu, Aug 9, 2018, 9:19 AM
Chargers coach Anthony Lynn told ESPN's Dan Graziano he wants to use Melvin Gordon more in the passing game.
Austin Ekeler
Austin Ekeler still the No. 2 running back
Tue, Aug 7, 2018, 6:41 PM
Jack Wang on Twitter
Austin Ekeler remains the No. 2 running back on the Chargers' unofficial depth chart.
Analysis: Seventh-rounder Justin Jackson made some noise in offseason Dynasty league circles, but Ekeler remains firmly entrenched behind Melvin Gordon. Perhaps Jackson could change that with a monster preseason but it is hard to see him dislodging Ekeler.
Mike Williams
Mike Williams listed with second-team offense

Jack Wang on Twitter
Mike Williams was listed with the second-team offense on the Chargers' unofficial depth chart.
Analysis: Unsurprisingly, Tyrell Williams is running with the first team opposite Keenan Allen. That could remain the case all year, though Williams' 6-foot-4 frame is going to be needed in the red zone with Antonio Gates still a free agent and Hunter Henry out for the season. Williams is a WR5/6 flier who could become more valuable as the year progresses.
Tyrell Williams
Tyrell Williams listed ahead of Mike Williams
Tue, Aug 7, 2018, 6:36 PM
Jack Wang on Twitter
Tyrell Williams is listed ahead of Mike Williams on the Chargers' initial depth chart.
Analysis: The Chargers are expected to regularly feature three-receiver sets in Hunter Henry's absence, but it is notable nonetheless. Mike caught just 11 balls across 10 rookie contests, while Tyrell quietly went 43/728/4 and averaged 16.9 yards per catch. He should be a fantasy factor as a WR3/4.
Joey Bosa
Joey Bosa's foot injury 'nothing serious'

Adam Schefter on Twitter
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Joey Bosa's left foot injury is "nothing serious."
Analysis: "He's fine," a source assured Schefter. Bosa will still almost certainly be held out of Saturday's preseason opener. Consider him day to day for the time being.

Desmond King
Desmond King could start at free safety

Eric Williams on Twitter
Chargers second-year DB Desmond King is in the mix for the starting free safety job.
Analysis: King was one of the better slot corners in the league as a rookie. Rayshawn Jenkins, Jahleel Addae and Jaylen Watkins have also got training camp reps opposite Derwin James. The Chargers are likely to use heavy rotation at safety this season.
Trevor Williams
Trevor Williams avoids high-ankle sprain
Thu, Aug 2, 2018, 2:32 PM
Jack Wang on Twitter
Chargers CB Trevor Williams has avoided a high-ankle sprain.
Analysis: Williams is expected to get some preseason reps, but his exact return date is unclear. For now, he should be considered week to week, with the sole goal being ready for Week 1. It's a huge sigh of relief for a Chargers secondary that's already lost Jason Verrett (Achilles') for the season.
Derwin James
Derwin James cleared to resume practicing

James Palmer on Twitter
Chargers activated S Derwin James (hamstring) from the active/NFI list.
Analysis: Provided he avoids further soft-tissue issues, James will be out there as the Chargers' Week 1 free safety.
Trevor Williams
Trevor Williams dealing with ankle injury
Tue, Jul 31, 2018, 5:52 PM
Chargers coach Anthony Lynn confirms CB Trevor Williams is dealing with a left ankle injury.
Analysis: "If Trevor's ankle is bad, then I would be concerned about the depth there," Lynn said. Williams had to be helped off the field after getting tangled up with Mike Williams. He was spotted on crutches and in a walking boot. The fact that the Chargers did not immediately label Williams' injury minor suggests it's at least a high-ankle sprain.

Trevor Williams (leg) spotted in walking boot

Associated Press
Chargers CB Trevor Williams was spotted with his left foot in a walking boot after being forced from Tuesday's practice.
Analysis: He was on crutches. Coach Anthony Lynn didn't have an update, but "hoped" it was merely an ankle sprain. If it is Williams' ankle, the immediate presence of crutches and a boot would suggest a "high" sprain. That would almost certainly sideline Williams for the rest of the summer, though he could be ready for Week 1. As it is, we still don't know what is actually bothering Williams.

Jason Verrett
Schefter confirms torn Achilles for Verrett

Adam Schefter on Twitter
ESPN's Adam Schefter confirms Chargers CB Jason Verrett is done for the season with a torn Achilles.
Analysis: Just brutal. Verrett, who missed most of last season due to a knee injury, tore his Achilles during his Chargers conditioning test on Friday. The former Pro Bowler will hit free agency next year having played just 25 games over five NFL seasons. Casey Hayward and Trevor Williams will open the year as L.A.'s starting outside corners with Desmond King working out of the slot.
