Sony Michel
Michel avoids structural damage, week to week
Mon, Oct 22, 2018, 1:59 PM
Adam Schefter on Twitter
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Sony Michel (knee) has avoided structural damage and is week to week.
Analysis: It is the best possible news, though we would still consider Michel on the wrong side of questionable for Week 8 against the Bills. The Patriots are not going to take any chances in a game they could win with their second-team. James White will be in the RB1 mix while perhaps Kenjon Barner or a free agent addition will rotate in behind.
Rob Gronkowski
Report: Gronkowski could return Week 8
Mon, Oct 22, 2018, 1:06 PM
Michael Giardi on Twitter
NFL Network's Michael Giardi reports Rob Gronkowski (back) could be ready for next Monday's game against the Bills.
Analysis: Per Giardi, Gronk missed Week 7 with "painful" back spasms that popped up on Friday, but it is believed to be a "short-term thing." Gronk, of course, has a history of back problems, so nothing can be taken for granted. The Pats won't push matters against the expansion-level Bills.
Sony Michel
Michel's knee injury 'not considered serious'
Mon, Oct 22, 2018, 12:13 PM
Ian Rapoport on Twitter
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Sony Michel's knee injury is "not considered serious," though it's unclear how long he might be sidelined.
Analysis: Michel's MRI brought back good news, but no one seems to know just how good. It still appears likely that Michel will miss next Monday's game against the Bills. We might not get our first formal update from the Patriots until Thursday, when they are required to issue their first Week 8 injury report. Fantasy owners should plan on being without Michel for at least game. Considering his history of knee woes, it could still be longer.
Josh Gordon
Brady says confidence in Gordon is growing
Mon, Oct 22, 2018, 8:53 AM
Mike Reiss on Twitter
Tom Brady said his "confidence" in Josh Gordon is "growing and growing and growing."
Analysis: "I'm excited to see where we're going," Brady added. Gordon had a few hiccups against the Bears, but he responded with a great, leaping catch on fourth down and a 55-yard catch-and-run to help set up a touchdown. He also played 95 percent of the snaps, besting the season-high of 81 percent he set the week before. The arrow is squarely pointing up for Gordon.
Kenjon Barner
Kenjon Barner rushes 10 times with Michel out
Sun, Oct 21, 2018, 4:28 PM
Kenjon Barner carried the ball 10 times for 36 yards in the Patriots' Week 7 win over the Bears.
Analysis: Sony Michel left this game early, leaving James White and Barner as the only options in the backfield. That will almost certainly change this week -- Mike Gillislee remains a free agent -- but Barner would be worth a look in most leagues if the Patriots do not add anyone.
Dwayne Allen
Dwayne Allen not targeted in Week 7 win
Sun, Oct 21, 2018, 4:24 PM
Dwayne Allen was not targeted in the Patriots' Week 7 win over the Bears.
Analysis: Even with Rob Gronkowski out, Allen was not even a thought in the passing game. He can be left on the wire, especially with Gronk expected back next week.
Cordarrelle Patterson
Cordarrelle Patterson has 95-yard KR TD
Sun, Oct 21, 2018, 4:22 PM
Cordarrelle Patterson recorded a 95-yard kick-return touchdown in the Patriots' Week 7 win over the Bears.
Analysis: Patterson set up the Bears' first touchdown with a fumble on a kickoff return, but he made up for it in the second quarter. With the Patriots down 17-7, Patterson took a kickoff 95 yards to the house to close the deficit and turn the game around. Despite the big special teams play, he has no value in standard fantasy leagues.
Chris Hogan
Chris Hogan has another solid game Week 7
Sun, Oct 21, 2018, 4:03 PM
Chris Hogan hauled in 6-of-7 targets for 63 yards in the Patriots' Week 7 win over the Bears.
Julian Edelman
Julian Edelman catches another TD in win
Sun, Oct 21, 2018, 4:02 PM
Julian Edelman hauled in 5-of-8 targets for 36 yards and a touchdown in the Patriots' Week 7 win over the Bears.
Analysis: Edelman earned his early touchdown, making a man miss and going through a couple other on his way to a nine-yard score on a screen pass on the opening drive of the game. He was not able to build on his hot start, however. He was targeted just once after halftime, and he did not record a catch in the second half. He has yet to top 57 yards since returning. He will always be a touchdown threat in this offense, but there is at least some reason for concern, especially with Rob Gronkowski expected back next week.
Josh Gordon
Josh Gordon goes for 100 yards in win
Sun, Oct 21, 2018, 4:02 PM
Josh Gordon hauled in 4-of-7 targets for 100 yards in the Patriots' Week 7 win over the Bears.
Analysis: The Patriots mostly focused on the short passing game early, but Gordon made his presence known with a great 20-yard catch in traffic on the final play of the first quarter. He dropped his second target on a low pass he probably should have worked back to, but he quickly made up for it by going high over a corner for a spectacular catch on fourth down. He was not able to repeat the feat on what would have been an impressive third-down catch in the third quarter, but he again made up for it with a 55-yard catch-and-run which ended just short of the goal line. The Patriots scored two plays later. Gordon now has 16 targets over the last two games, and while Rob Gronkowski is expected to return next week, it looks like he will have a big role moving forward. That makes him an upside WR3 next week in Buffalo.
James White
James White scores twice in Week 7 win
Sun, Oct 21, 2018, 4:01 PM
James White rushed 11 times for 40 yards and hauled in 8-of-10 targets for 57 yards and two touchdowns in the Patriots' Week 7 win over the Bears.
Analysis: Already being heavily utilized, it did not seem like White had much room to grow in this offense, but that changed when Sony Michel exited with a knee injury in the second quarter. Kenjon Barner mixed in, but White was the primary back the rest of the way. He parlayed that role into yet another receiving touchdown in the second quarter, cooking an overmatched Leonard Floyd to get wide open near the goal line, and he found the end zone again in the fourth quarter on a jet flip in which he beat the defense to the corner. He now has six receiving scores on the season. Most impressively, he was able to grind out two first downs to help kill the clock in the fourth quarter. With Michel looking likely to miss some time, White could return RB1 value the next several weeks.
Tom Brady
Brady throws 3 TDs, Patriots hang on for win
Sun, Oct 21, 2018, 3:27 PM
Tom Brady completed 25-of-36 passes for 277 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception in the Patriots' Week 7 win over the Bears.
Sony Michel
Michel carted to locker room with knee injury
Sun, Oct 21, 2018, 12:51 PM
Sony Michel exited Week 7 against the Bears with a left knee injury.
Analysis: Sony Michel had his left leg twisted as he was being tackled at the end of a second-quarter run. He immediately dropped the ball and appeared to be in serious pain as he was helped off the field. He was eventually carted to the locker room. The injury is a big concern considering Michel had questions about his knees in the pre-draft process and was not ready for Week 1 because of a knee scope in August. With Michel out, James White should dominate the backfield work.
Rob Gronkowski
Gronkowski (back) headlines NE inactives
Sun, Oct 21, 2018, 10:33 AM
Patriots declared Rob Gronkowski (back) inactive for Week 7 against the Bears.
Analysis: This was the expectation, but Adam Schefter reports Gronk has a good chance to return next week against the Bills. New England also declared RT Marcus Cannon (concussion), TE Jacob Hollister (hamstring), DE John Simon (shoulder), DE Geneo Grissom (ankle), OL Brian Schwenke, and DL Keionta Davis inactive for Week 7.
Josh Gordon
Josh Gordon (hamstring) officially active
Sun, Oct 21, 2018, 10:33 AM
Josh Gordon (hamstring) is active for Week 7 against the Bears.
Analysis: As are Julian Edelman (heel) and Sony Michel (knee). Gordon saw his playing time and target share jump last week, and he could see even more work with Rob Gronkowski (back) sidelined against the Bears. He is an upside WR3.
Sony Michel
Sony Michel (knee) active for Week 7
Sun, Oct 21, 2018, 10:32 AM
Sony Michel (knee) is active Week 7 against the Bears.
Analysis: As are Julian Edelman (heel) and Josh Gordon (hamstring). Michel's matchup is not ideal, but he has dominated carries the last several weeks and has as much touchdown upside as any back this side of Todd Gurley. He remains a back-end RB1.
Julian Edelman
Julian Edelman (heel) ready to go Week 7
Sun, Oct 21, 2018, 10:32 AM
Julian Edelman (heel) is active Week 7 against the Bears.
Analysis: As are Sony Michel (knee) and Josh Gordon (hamstring). Rob Gronkowski (back) is out, however, meaning Edelman could see more targets than usual. He is an upside WR2 this week.
Rob Gronkowski
Rob Gronkowski (back) downgraded to out
Sun, Oct 21, 2018, 7:56 AM
New England Patriots on Twitter
Rob Gronkowski (back, ankle) is out for Week 7 against the Bears.
Analysis: Gronk didn't make the trip to Chicago after having his back lock up on him during Friday's practice. The Patriots are optimistic he'll be back for next week's Monday night showdown in Buffalo. With Jacob Hollister (hamstring) also sidelined, Dwayne Allen should play close to an every-down role at tight end. Gronkowski's absence will open up targets for Josh Gordon, Julian Edelman and James White, among others.
