Cameron Brate
Cameron Brate (hip) has arthroscopic surgery
Sat, Jan 19, 2019, 8:35 AM
Cameron Brate had arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn labrum in his hip.
Analysis: He's expected to miss a "few months." Brate played through the injury for most of the year but didn't miss any games. The Bucs expect Brate to be ready for the start of June's minicamp.
DeSean Jackson
D-Jax on staying with Bucs: 'We'll see'
Fri, Jan 18, 2019, 12:27 PM
When asked about returning to the Buccaneers in 2019, DeSean Jackson said, "We'll see."
Analysis: "That's what I got an agent for," Jackson told TMZ while confirming he has yet to speak with new coach Bruce Arians. D-Jax wasn't happy with his role last season and reportedly would welcome a trade, though Arians hopes the veteran deep threat will reconsider. Jackson is owed $10 million in 2019, the final year of his contract.
Gerald McCoy
'Real chance' Bucs release DT Gerald McCoy
Wed, Jan 16, 2019, 10:37 AM
ESPN Bucs reporter Jenna Laine believes there's a "real chance" Tampa Bay releases DT Gerald McCoy this offseason.
Analysis: McCoy has three years left on his contract but has no guaranteed money remaining, and the Bucs can save $13 million against the cap by cutting him. McCoy turns 31 next month, but his production has remained steady. McCoy has at least six sacks in six straight seasons and received strong marks for his run defense in 2018. The Bucs have a ton of key free agents and may need the money freed up in order to sign those players, specifically LT Donovan Smith.
Antwaan Randle El
Bucs hire Antwaan Randle El to coaching staff
Tue, Jan 15, 2019, 10:41 PM
Bucs hired former Steelers WR Antwaan Randle El as an offensive assistant.
Analysis: Former NFL S Cody Grimm, son of legendary OL coach Russ Grimm, was also hired as a defense/special teams assistant. Coach Bruce Arians has done a great job of getting young coaches into the league, notably Byron Leftwich who has risen to OC duties rather quickly. Randle El played for Arians in Pittsburgh. This will be the 39-year-old's first coaching gig.
DeSean Jackson
Arians already re-recruiting D-Jax to Bucs
Sat, Jan 12, 2019, 10:40 AM
Ian Rapoport on Twitter
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports new Bucs coach Bruce Arians is attempting to convince DeSean Jackson to return to the Buccaneers next season.
Analysis: One of the first moves Arians reportedly made upon being hired was ask for Jackson's phone number. The two have yet to talk, but Arians has all the intention in the world in bringing the secondary-lifter back in 2019. Jackson would admittedly be an enticing Best Ball option in Arians' downfield full-throttle attack, but his presence would also likely keep Chris Godwin on limited reps for another year.
Jameis Winston
Arians: Jameis must be 'little bit smarter'
Thu, Jan 10, 2019, 3:56 PM
Rick Stroud on Twitter
Speaking Thursday, new Bucs coach Bruce Arians said Jameis Winston just needs to be a "little bit smarter."
Analysis: "No pressure. No pressure whatsoever," Arians said of his expectations for his new quarterback. "I want him to relax and play the game. Talent is no issue. It's just becoming a little bit smarter." It's a fair appraisal of Winston's to-date skill-set. Arians made it clear in so many words he would only come out of "retirement" for the right quarterback situation. He didn't get the Browns/Baker Mayfield job, but he must be comfortable with 25-year-old Winston. Winston's down-field mindset certainly jibes with Arians'. He simply must cut down on his turnovers. It's going to be a tricky needle to thread.

Byron Leftwich
Arians says OC Leftwich will call Bucs' plays
Wed, Jan 9, 2019, 12:34 PM
Thomas Bassinger on Twitter
Coach Bruce Arians said on Wednesday that OC Byron Leftwich will call the Bucs' offensive plays.
Analysis: It's a shift in philosophy for Arians, who called his own plays as the coach of the Cardinals before retiring at the end of the 2017 season. Leftwich has been groomed by Arians as his QBs coach in Arizona, and Leftwich was a holdover for Steve Wilks in 2018 before the whole staff was fired. Leftwich is a rising star in the coaching ranks, and Arians is doing him a favor letting him try to swim on his own. It's entirely possible Leftwich is groomed as the Bucs' future head coach.

Bucs hire Goodwin as run-game coordinator
Wed, Jan 9, 2019, 12:30 PM
Bucs hired ex-Cardinals OC Harold Goodwin as assistant head coach and run-game coordinator.
Analysis: Goodwin, 45, has been by new coach Bruce Arians' side at his last four stops now, coaching together in Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, Arizona, and now Tampa Bay. Goodwin spent 2018 out of the game but did draw some head-coach interest in the offseason ahead of 2017. Goodwin will handle run-game plans while up-and-comer Byron Leftwich will coordinate the pass offense.

Todd Monken interviews with Jets Tuesday
Tue, Jan 8, 2019, 4:07 PM
Brian Costello on Twitter
The Jets interviewed Bucs OC Todd Monken for their head-coaching vacancy on Tuesday.
Analysis: The news comes the same day fellow Jets candidate Kliff Kingsbury was snapped up by the Cardinals. With nearly every head-coach searching team hoping for an offensive mind to run the whole operation, Monken's chances should not be downplayed in Florham Park.

Jeremy Fowler on Twitter
Bucs OC Todd Monken will interview for the Packers' head coaching job.

Bengals request interview with Todd Monken
Thu, Jan 3, 2019, 9:36 AM
Jeremy Fowler on Twitter
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports the Bengals have requested an interview with Bucs OC Todd Monken.
Analysis: Monken already has an interview scheduled with the Jets. A former head coach at Southern Miss, Monken lead one of the most explosive offenses in the league even with since-fired Dirk Koetter meddling late in the season. He should at worst land a coordinator position even if he does not get a head-coaching job.
Jameis Winston
Bucs GM: Jameis Winston will be back in 2019
Mon, Dec 31, 2018, 12:53 PM
Greg Auman on Twitter
Speaking at Monday's season-ending presser, Bucs GM Jason Licht said Jameis Winston would remain the team's starting quarterback in 2019.
Analysis: "He has done some amazing things," Licht said of Winston, who was both suspended and benched in 2018. "There's a lot to like about Jamies and he'll be here next year." Winston is still only 25 (next week), but he has made startlingly-little progress across four NFL seasons. He is still working from a high floor, however, and theoretically has a next step to take. Winston is only under contract through next year.

Jets to interview Todd Monken for HC vacancy
Mon, Dec 31, 2018, 12:40 PM
Tom Pelissero on Twitter
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the Jets will interview Bucs OC Todd Monken for their head-coaching vacancy.
Analysis: The ex-head coach at Southern Miss, Monken spent the past three years in Tampa, graduating solely to coordinator duties in 2018. He was overseeing one of the league's hottest, if turnover-happy, offenses before seeming to come to loggerheads with coach Dirk Koetter, who was fired on Sunday. With creative offensive minds in high demand, Monken could land a head gig.
Jacquizz Rodgers
Quizz Rodgers logs 4 touches in Week 17
Sun, Dec 30, 2018, 4:36 PM
Jacquizz Rodgers rushed three times for three yards and caught his lone target for two yards in the Bucs' Week 17 loss to the Falcons.
Analysis: As Ronald Jones played himself out of the equation early, Rodgers wound up operating as the Bucs' clear-cut No. 2 back in the second half of the season behind Peyton Barber. A replacement-level passing-game specialist, Rodgers' return to Tampa Bay is questionable with his contract scheduled to expire.
Ronald Jones
Ronald Jones ends rookie year with 30 touches
Sun, Dec 30, 2018, 3:58 PM
Ronald Jones played one offensive snap in the Bucs' Week 17 loss to Atlanta.
Analysis: The 38th overall pick in the 2018 draft, Jones never overcome a tumultous training camp and preseason, finishing his rookie campaign with just 77 yards on 30 touches. Battling injuries but mostly ineffectiveness, Jones played just 18 snaps in the Bucs' final eight games, touching the ball five times during that span and "gaining" one yard. Despite his lofty draft position, Jones should not be guaranteed a roster spot on the 2019 Bucs.
