Ronald Jones
Ronald Jones struggles in second game
Sat, Aug 18, 2018, 10:25 PM
Ronald Jones had four carries for two yards in the Bucs' second preseason game.
Analysis: It's another rough game from Jones, who has more carries than yards this preseason. Peyton Barber played ahead of Jones, and the Bucs used Jacquizz Rodgers over Jones in pass situations. Jones is trending down going into the third preseason game. He's going to open the year as a high-upside backup.
Charles Sims
Bucs lose RB Charles Sims to left knee injury
Sat, Aug 18, 2018, 7:18 PM
Bucs RB Charles Sims exited Saturday's preseason game with a left knee injury and will not return.
Analysis: He was immediately ruled out, which isn't a good sign. Sims got injured on the game's opening kickoff. Sims is the Bucs' third-down back. If he misses extended time, Peyton Barber could take on a bigger role in the passing game.
Vita Vea
Vita Vea (calf) sheds walking boot

Jenna Laine on Twitter
Buccaneers first-round DT Vita Vea (calf) has shed his walking boot.
Analysis: However, it's unlikely Vea will appear in any preseason games while rehabbing his strained calf. The 12th overall pick in April's draft, the Washington alum was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year in 2017.
Stevie Tu'ikolovatu
Buccaneers waive/injured Stevie Tu'ikolovatu

Jenna Laine on Twitter
Buccaneers waived/injured DT Stevie Tu'ikolovatu.
Analysis: The 2017 seventh-rounder needs surgery to repair a torn triceps. The Bucs could choose to stash him on injured reserve if he clears waivers, though ESPN's Jenna Laine believes it's more likely Tu'ikolovatu will be released with an injury settlement. The 27-year-old out of USC has yet to play an NFL down.
Justin Watson
Bucs fifth-rd rookie Justin Watson on bubble?
Fri, Aug 17, 2018, 10:44 AM
NFL Nation Buccaneers
NFL Nation's Jenna Laine believes fifth-round WR Justin Watson may earn a roster spot only because the Bucs might not want to risk putting him through waivers.
Analysis: A 6-foot-2, 225-lb SPARQ monstrosity (91st-percentile), Watson is already behind the rest of the team's receivers after missing offseason activities with a hamstring strain. Bobo Wilson and Freddy Martino aren't nearly as athletic or physical as Watson, but both have an edge over the rookie given their experience on special teams. A trio of Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Watson is one to salivate over if the Bucs make it happen in 2019.
Chandler Catanzaro
Catanzaro has 'moved on' from bad debut
Tue, Aug 14, 2018, 8:01 AM
Bucs K Chandler Catanzaro said he has "moved on" from his bad performance in the preseason opener.
Analysis: Catanzaro missed an extra point and a field goal during the kicker-cursed Bucs' preseason opener. "I've watched the film. I knew what was wrong right when I hit it. So I've already moved on," Catanzaro said. "I'm ready for the next kick." Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said the team is sticking by Catanzaro, but that could certainly change if he has another bad outing.
Peyton Barber
Koetter says Peyton Barber 'is our starter'
Mon, Aug 13, 2018, 11:51 AM
Tampa Bay Times
Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said Peyton Barber "is our starter."
Analysis: This kind of proclamation is easy to take with a grain of salt in May or June, but these comments come after Barber started and played all but one snap with the first-team offense in the preseason opener. Second-round rookie Ronald Jones dropped a pass on the only snap he played with the starting unit. "We're definitely going to use Ronald Jones and take advantage of what he's going to do," Koetter said. "Again, we've got three more preseason games. Let's just let it sort out a little more." It still would be a surprise if Jones is not the starter when Week 1 rolls around, but he might not be the workhorse back fantasy players were hoping to see.
De'Vante Harris
Buccaneers claim ex-Saints CB De'Vante Harris
Sun, Aug 12, 2018, 3:58 PM
Field Yates on Twitter
Buccaneers claimed CB De'Vante Harris off waivers from the Saints.
Analysis: Harris will stay in the division following his release from New Orleans. The Saints benched him in Week 3 following career performances from Sam Bradford (27-32-346-3) and Tom Brady (30-39-447-3) to start the year. He'll have to flourish on special teams to stick with the Bucs into the regular season.
Charles Sims
Charles Sims not a roster lock
Sun, Aug 12, 2018, 10:29 AM
Greg Auman on Twitter
Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times doesn't consider Charles Sims a lock to make the Buccaneers' 53-man roster.
Analysis: The Bucs brought Sims back on a one-year deal this offseason with the intention of using him as a pass-catcher out of the backfield. However, with undrafted rookie Shaun Wilson continuing to impress at camp, Sims' roster spot can no longer be taken for granted. Jacquizz Rodgers could also be in danger of losing his spot to Wilson.
Ronald Jones
Ronald Jones makes strides in pass protection
Fri, Aug 10, 2018, 3:59 PM
Pewter Report
Bucs coach Dirk Koetter praised Ronald Jones for his pass protection in Thursday's preseason opener.
Analysis: Jones had been struggling with blocking at training camp. His preseason debut was a step in the right direction, though Koetter graded Jones as "pretty average" on the night. Jones could see more time with the starters in next week's game with Tennessee.
Vernon Hargreaves
Bucs hopeful Hargreaves will miss 2-3 weeks
Fri, Aug 10, 2018, 12:56 PM
Rick Stroud on Twitter
According to Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, the Buccaneers are "hopeful" CB Vernon Hargreaves (groin) will only miss 2-3 weeks.
Analysis: Hargreaves went down with a strained groin in Thursday's preseason game against the Dolphins, though fortunately the injury doesn't appear serious. If Hargreaves can avoid setbacks, he should be back for the start of the regular season. Hargreaves struggled last season, earning PFF's No. 90 grade out of 120 qualifiers at cornerback.
Vernon Hargreaves
Bucs CB Hargreaves (groin) out 'some time'
Fri, Aug 10, 2018, 10:59 AM
Rick Stroud on Twitter
Bucs CB Vernon Hargreaves (groin) will be out "some time."
Analysis: Hargreaves was hurt in Thursday night's preseason opener. The 2016 first-rounder had been having a fine camp, and this injury further flattens a weak Bucs cornerback group. Hargreaves is penned in as the Bucs' nickel back.
Ronald Jones
Ronald Jones scores TD in preseason debut
Thu, Aug 9, 2018, 9:24 PM
Ronald Jones rushed eight times for nine yards and a touchdown in the Bucs' preseason opener.
Analysis: It was all Peyton Barber to begin the game, but the No. 38 overall pick got some brief run with the starters. His numbers were obviously unimpressive, though his touchdown was an excellent goal-line run where he planted his foot at the six and made a quick cut to find the end zone. Needing to improve in the passing game, Jones was held without a catch on one target.
Vernon Hargreaves
Bucs lose CB Vernon Hargreaves to groin pull
Thu, Aug 9, 2018, 6:36 PM
Bucs CB Vernon Hargreaves suffered a groin injury in Thursday night's preseason opener and is done for the game.
Analysis: The injury happened in the first quarter. A disappointment through two seasons as a first-round pick in the 2016 draft, Hargreaves has been in danger of losing playing time after struggling both as an outside and slot corner. The Bucs' secondary was thin and weak even before Hargreaves' injury.
Noah Spence
Noah Spence adds 35 pounds, now up to 263
Wed, Aug 8, 2018, 11:48 PM
Bucs third-year DE Noah Spence has gained 35 pounds this offseason and is now at 263.
Ronald Jones
Bucs rookie RB Jones struggling in pass game
Wed, Aug 8, 2018, 7:42 PM
Tampa Bay Times
Second-round pick Ronald Jones has struggled in pass protection early in training camp.
Analysis: The Tampa Bay Times also says Jones' "hands need to get softer," a deficiency that isn't necessarily easy to overcome. Jones was used sparingly as a receiver in both high school and college and caught only 32 passes in 40 games at USC. He was also inconsistent in blitz pickup on college tape. Beat writer Rick Stroud says Peyton Barber remains the Bucs' nominal starter entering preseason games. Jones should still get every opportunity to pass him in August.
DeSean Jackson
DeSean Jackson getting work in the slot
Mon, Aug 6, 2018, 10:20 AM
Tampa Bay Times
The Tampa Bay Times' Rick Stroud reports DeSean Jackson has "increasingly" been working from the slot during training camp.
Chris Godwin
Bucs 'plan to start' Chris Godwin this season
Mon, Aug 6, 2018, 10:13 AM
Tampa Bay Times
The Tampa Bay Times' Rick Stroud writes the Bucs "plan to start" Chris Godwin opposite Mike Evans this season.
Analysis: Stroud notes DeSean Jackson is "having a great training camp" and will play, but Godwin "is a more complete player." This matches up with what OC Todd Monken said about Godwin during the offseason program, and coach Dirk Koetter believes the sophomore is a starting-caliber player, as well. "We look at it as if we have four starting receivers," Koetter said. "The other three have been, and we believe Chris is every bit in that same category." Even if he "starts," it will be tough for Godwin to see enough targets to be a redraft factor in a loaded pass-catching group. Still, he has the talent and upside to be worth a late-round pick.
Shaun Wilson
Koetter: UDFA Shaun Wilson has stood out
Thu, Aug 2, 2018, 10:58 AM
Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said undrafted rookie RB Shaun Wilson has stood out during training camp.
Analysis: A diminutive (5-foot-8, 185 pounds) runner out of Duke, Wilson has drawn buzz from reporters so far in camp, and his coach has noticed as well. It is still tough to imagine him cracking the final roster, but nothing is set in stone behind Ronald Jones on the depth chart.
Vita Vea
Vita Vea's injury 'better' than anticipated
Tue, Jul 31, 2018, 10:18 AM
Scott Smith on Twitter
Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said first-round DT Vita Vea's calf injury "was better than we thought."
Analysis: Vea was spotted moving around on a scooter during Tuesday's practice, but it sounds like he has avoided a serious injury. He will likely miss a couple weeks, but he should be good to go for Week 1.
